World Rugby claim women’s rugby is one of sport’s great success stories, experiencing unprecedented growth around the world. Participation levels are at an all-time high with 2.7 million players globally – making up more than a quarter of the global playing population – and a 28% increase in registered players since 2017! This growth pattern has been reflected here at Exeter Saracens with over 80 girls registered as junior players and a growing ladies team, making us one of the largest rugby clubs in Devon for girls rugby!

F.A.Q

I’m not sure if my daughter will like it; can she come along and give it a go?

We welcome all girls regardless of previous playing experience; as rugby is often not played in primary school, year 7 can be the first time girls even realise that they can play rugby! We offer everybody the opportunity to come along and have some taster sessions; membership is refunded in full if they decide within 30 days that rugby is not for them.

What age team will my daughter join?

Up to and including year 6, rugby is played as a mixed sport, then from year 7 the genders split off into separate teams. From September 2022, girls spend 1-2 years in the same age team: school year 7's play in U12’s; years 8 & 9 play in the U14’s; years 10 & 11 play in the U 16's; and years 12 & 13 play in the U18’s team.

She wants to try but is afraid of tackling.

Play progresses in accordance with RFU Age Grade rules and ensures that every player can enjoy rugby in a safe environment where they can develop their personal and social skills, as well as a wide array of transferable multi-sports skills. Although rugby is a team sport, Coaches will not push individual girls to do anything they do not want to do, or that the coaches feel they are not ready to do.

How much will it cost and what will she need?

Junior membership will be £90 for the 2022/23 season (1st September 2022 to 31st August 2023). There are no weekly subs and payment plans are available on request. She is fine to wear school PE kit (shorts & T-shirt) in the first instance; she will need a gum shield (£3-5 online or in sports shops) and suitable footwear. Please talk to us before coming along as the type of footwear depends on the ground conditions at the time. There is an online kit shop from which you can purchase kit. https://stitch2printuk.co.uk/product-category/clubs/exeter-saracens-junior-training-wear/
